In nerve-sparing technique, the nerve bundles that congregate on the other side of the prostate, that are essential to trigger off erections necessary for sexual intercourse are separated from the prostate but nonetheless left together. The nerve bundles surrounding the prostate gland are wholly left unharmed in the process but if cancer has spread to these nerve bundles then they are cut off. The nerve-sparing techniques are utilized in these surgeries to lower the occurrence of impotence by 40% to 60%. Sometimes erectile dysfunction results temporarily from these surgeries even when nerve sparing technique is utilized as a safety measure. If temporary impotency occurs, it takes almost 6- 18 months for the patient to recover from the disorder and achieve rigid erections necessary for sexual intercourse. |
