Sexually Transmitted Diseases: An Introductory Note
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are ailments that transmit from one person to another basically through sexual intercourse and are also known as Venereal Diseases (VD), Social Disease and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). The list of sexually transmitted diseases is extensive and the prominent names that fall in this category are HIV, gonorrhea, syphilis, human papillomavirus (HPV), trichomoniasis, genital warts, and Chlamydia.
STDs & Occurrence
- STDs occur when exchange of different body fluids like blood, vaginal fluids, ejaculations and other liquids exchange between partners via vaginal contact, oral sex and anal sex. Moreover, sexual activity involving the genitals and the fingers is also a leading cause of the spread of STDs.
- If needles utilized for the purpose of injecting drugs are shared between people it can also lead to STDs. Similarly, sharing of tattoo needles is also a primary factor of STD transmission.
- STDs are also likely to pass on from the mother to her child during pregnancy or through breastfeeding.
- It is worth mentioning that one succumbs to STDs only when he indulges in sexual intercourse with a person already afflicted with any of the sexually transmitted diseases or when he exchanges drug injecting needles with a STD afflicted guy.
- Indulging in sex with multiple partners can also lead to the growth of STDs as in such a situation, the possibility of a partner being already afflicted with any of the sexually transmitted infections is very high.
STDs & Prevention
- Sexual intercourse with an STD infected partner should be avoided at all cost in order to keep STDs at bay.
- Condom use is a must even when the partners are not suffering from any of the sexually transmitted diseases and are normal, healthy individuals.
STDs & Treatment
- The drug salvarsan is a treatment of syphilis , a specific sexually transmitted disease.
- Antibiotics have also made the cure of sexually transmitted diseases possible to a large extent.
- One another treatment method of STDs in general is contact tracing in which the STD afflicted people with whom the infected has indulged in sexual intercourse are traced and treated. This treatment procedure was very much popular during 1960s and 1970s.
