TESTOSTERONE DEFICIENCY: A FACTOR THAT LEADS TO ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

« Back to Archive

What is Testosterone Deficiency?

Testosterone deficiency is the inadequate production of the male sex hormone testosterone in the testes and this disorder leads to depression, incomplete development of the bone and muscle, a lower sense of wellbeing, lack in concentration, etc. But most specifically, erectile dysfunction, the disorder that makes the patient unable to trigger off erections necessary for sexual intercourse, is the ultimate result of lower amount of testosterone secretion in the body.

This condition of inadequate testosterone production in a male is also known as male hypogonadism.

The Link Between Testosterone Deficiency and Erectile Dysfunction

Testosterone plays an overwhelming role in facilitating the erectile response of a male. If scarce amount of testosterone is produced in the testes of a person, the erection phase that follows when a man is sexually aroused would not come to a grand conclusion and as such orgasm and ejaculation would not be initiated and the person would inevitably fail to have satisfactory sexual intercourse with his partner.

Researches have established that the male sex hormone testosterone exerts significant influence on the penile tissues. A lower amount of testosterone production decreases the anatomical as well as physiological/biochemical erectile functions.

Causes Of Testosterone Deficiency

Testosterone production lowers in a man on account of several factors and they are stated below:

  • As a man reaches the age of 30, it is natural to suffer from a decline in the testosterone level in his body. For healthy men, the testosterone reduction in the body after a particular period in his life is a normal phenomenon.
  • Malfunction of the pituitary gland, an organ stationed in the brain is responsible for a decrease in testosterone in the body.
  • Sarcoidosis, the medical condition that leads to the swelling of the lungs can cause testosterone deficiency in the body.
  • Some other causes of testosterone deficiency are:
  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Addiction to alcohol
  • Stress
  • Corticosteroid drugs
  • Hormones for the treatment of prostate cancer
  • The treatment of cancer by radiation(Chemotherapy)
  • Excessive iron accumulation in the body

 Treatment Of Testosterone Deficiency

Testosterone deficiency in the body is treated through testosterone replacement therapy. In testosterone replacement therapy,

  • Testosterone gel is utilized to make up for the testosterone deficit.
  • Two times per day, mucoadhesive material is applied above the teeth of the affected person.
  • After every two or three weeks, the patient is injected with intramuscular injections.
  • Testosterone patch is provided to the patient to be worn over the body as well as on the scrotum.

You can choose any of the above treatment procedures. However, it is necessary to consult the physician before treating yourself with testosterone replacement therapy.
